How it works

File size = (video bitrate + audio bitrate) × duration ÷ 8. Bitrate is in bits per second, so dividing by 8 gives bytes. For the reverse calculation, the tool divides the target size by the duration and subtracts the audio bitrate.

Questions

What bitrate should I use for YouTube?

YouTube recommends about 8 Mbps for 1080p at 24–30 fps, 12 Mbps for 1080p at 50–60 fps, 35–45 Mbps for 4K at 24–30 fps and 53–68 Mbps for 4K at 50–60 fps (SDR, H.264). The preset buttons use these values.

Why is my exported file a little different from the result?

Most exports use variable bitrate (VBR), so the real bitrate goes up and down with the picture. Container overhead also adds a little. Treat the result as a close estimate.

Is 1 GB 1000 MB or 1024 MB here?

This calculator uses 1 GB = 1000 MB and 1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes, the same as hard disk makers. Windows shows sizes in 1024 units, so a file may look about 7% smaller there.

How do I make a video small enough for WhatsApp?

Put the size limit in "Target file size", enter the video length, and export at the video bitrate shown. Lower the resolution to 720p if the bitrate comes out very low.
