Labs use different bleed and safe margins. Always check your lab's template before printing.
How it works
Pixels = inches × DPI. Bleed is added to both sides of the width and the height before converting. The centre fold is half the canvas width, which is where the album binds.
Questions
What is the pixel size of a 12×36 album sheet?
At 300 DPI, a 12×36 inch sheet is 10,800 × 3,600 pixels. Each 12×18 page of the spread is 5,400 × 3,600 pixels.
What DPI should I use for album printing?
300 DPI is the usual standard for photo albums. Some labs accept 254 DPI; use what your lab asks for.
What is bleed?
Bleed is extra picture area beyond the cut line, so no white edge shows after trimming. Keep faces and text away from the edges and from the centre fold.
Why does the file become so large?
A 12×36 sheet at 300 DPI has about 39 megapixels, so an uncompressed 8-bit RGB layer is over 100 MB. Layers add more. Save the final print file as a high-quality JPEG if your lab accepts it.
